On towards Yarmouth.....

Old postcards are sometimes poorly produced and grainy, I've done my best to scan them. Please click thumbnails for full size picture.

Dates are from the card or my estimate (where possible). The maker of the card is shown in brackets (where available).

Brambles Holiday centre

Golden Hill fort

Brambles Chine Holiday camp (at the eastern end of

Colwell Bay), probably  from the 1960's. (Dixon)

Golden Hill Fort, inland south of Colwell Bay, was completed in 1870

and was one of the Palmerston Follies. This was taken when it

was used for light industry, it is now to be used for housing. (Judges)

Fort Albert

Not a postcard, but rather a photo of Fort Albert, completed in1856.

'The Northern extremity of Colwell Bay is called CLIFF'S END, and protected by ALBERT FORT, a battery mounting 40 gun'

Black's Guide 1870

It has been converted to apartments. Note Hurst Castle in the background.

Further east is Fort Victoria was built at Sconce Point in 1853, which is at the narrowest point of the Solent. Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures of this. The site is now a country park operated by the Isle of Wight Council

Nortin Green, Isle of Wight New Inn Norton Green

An undated picture of Norton Green, a hamlet

just off the Freshwater to Yarmouth Road.

The New Inn Norton Green, probably in the 1950's (Bay Series)

Savoy Holiday centre

Savoy Holiday Camp

Savoy Holiday Centre pictured in 1987. This is set back from the coast near Fort Victoria. During the second world war it was a military camp. There has been considerable development since the photo was taken.

Unfortunately not good quality, a view of the play area and chalets at Savoy Holiday Camp. (It has various names as it has been upgraded)

Norton Chalet Hotel

View from Norton Chalet

An undated picture (probably early 1950's) of Norton Chalet

Hotel. Like Savoy, during the second world war it was a military

camp. It is still a holiday centre, Norton Grange.

Again not good quality, a view from the grounds of

Norton Chalet Hotel towards Yarmouth

The wreck of HMS Gladiator, a Royal Navy Cruiser which was in collision with an America mail liner, St Paul, off Fort Victoria on  25th April 1908 with the loss of 29 lives. The vessel was eventually righted using cables anchored to the shore (the anchor points may still be seen on the footpath between Fort Victoria and Yarmouth).

More information about HMS Gladiator (outside site)
