Golden Hill Fort,
inland south of Colwell Bay, was completed in 1870
and was one of the Palmerston Follies. This was taken when
it
was used for light industry, it is now to be used for housing. (Judges) |
Not a postcard, but rather a photo of Fort Albert,
completed in1856, it has been
converted to apartments. Note Hurst Castle in the background.
'The Northern extremity
of Colwell Bay is called CLIFF'S END, and protected by ALBERT FORT, a
battery mounting 40 gun."

Savoy
Holiday Centre pictured in 1987. This is set back from the coast near Fort
Victoria. During the second world war it was a military camp. There has
been considerable development since the photo was taken. It is now known

The
wreck of HMS Gladiator, a Royal Navy Cruiser which was in collision with
an America mail liner, St Paul, off Fort Victoria on 25th April 1908
with the loss of 29 lives. The vessel was eventually righted using cables
anchored to the shore (the anchor points may still be seen on the footpath
between Fort Victoria and Yarmouth).
